The question I most commonly get asked is what do I do when I like a painting and I don’t know where to take it from here? Like it’s just begun, the first two layers are in and I’m feeling the magic yet I feel like it’s not done and I don’t want to “ mess it up“. Example, this painting is for a client and I know she wants botanicals and animals and yet these first few layers floated so freely out of me there’s a precious movement here and rawness that I don’t want to lose. Actually—I know exactly where I’m going to take this painting, but that’s taken years of practice to understand how I visualize and execute.

Here are my suggestions:

1. You can work slow and steady, make little marks with water soluble wax crayons, add a little gold leaf or paint pen. Sometimes small moves can effect the whole painting and be enough.

2. Take space. You need input and a little or big break. When you go back and take a photo of it or have your first glance off it “your first thought is often your best thought.”

3. You need input. Write about ideas and things you’d like for it to feel like, look at inspiring old books, color-ways, patterns and more. What is your intent for this painting?

In between all those three something should emerge that feels right!

Day 1 of the workshop. We are learning to dance between the polarities and find the union, that sweet Venn diagram or vesica Pisces in the middle. Today we will take more time with our journals, movement, breath, witnessing, sketching ideas into deeper meaning and then plan a little bit of the process but still respond & always allow for the WabiSabi playfulness & beauty in the imperfections to take place.
